PageRank and the Google Toolbar  Reply with quote

The Google Toolbar displays a 0 thru 10 ranking, known as Page Rank, or PR, for each page the user visits. This value is calculated mathematically, and attempts to rank the popularity of a page, or more specifically the likelyhood of a random surfer finding that page. Unlike the Alexa Toolbar, traffic to a page is irrelevant to it's ranking.

PR is utilized by Google to determine how often to spider pages for updates. Low PR pages rarely get spidered, while very high PR pages will be spidered each day, or possibly even multiple times a day. This helps Google wisely allocate it's spidering resources.

PR has also been an important component of the Google algorithm which determines the search results on Google for given terms and phrases. Although the actual value of PR in the current algorithm is subject to debate by webmasters and SEO'ers.

Google PageRank appears to be a value that is regularly updated for pages, as external links and internal linking structures change over time. And although G does display a PR value in their toolbar, the true value is masked in many ways. Firstly, the actual value is not simply an integer value, so the displayed value in the toolbar is just an approximation. Secondly, even these approximate values are only updated for toolbar viewers on an irregular schedule of roughly 2 to 3 months.
