Women take home-based businesses to next level
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Move over, Mary Kay. Pay attention, Pampered Chef.
Women's home-based businesses are expanding beyond selling ready-made products, hosting parties and pitching wares exclusively to friends and neighbors.
As women leave or take a break from corporate jobs to care for their families, a growing number are tapping the same professional skills they used in the office to find success on their own. Many are doing event planning, business consulting, market research, bookkeeping, interior decorating, freelance writing and graphic design from their houses, small business experts say.
"Those are viable businesses," says Christopher Hansen, president of the Home-Based Business Council, a nonprofit group that assists more than 20,000 home-based businesses. "They allow the individual to gear her time to meet the needs of the project.
"Often times these jobs or self-employment opportunities come from networking with companies they've worked with before. They merely do pieces of the work they used to do before they left the office to have families."
